Word of the day: Rhythm.

Day 5 --- Monty Harper

Day Four

Word of the day is Kinetic. It's all about movement.

First we made a moving three-dimentional work of art (a mobile) displaying our names.

Then we danced the bean bag boogie using Beanie Babies as our bean bags.

Our craft project was a rhythm shaker made from controversial plastic water bottles. As Owen loves to say, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle."

Rhythm shakers in hand, we danced another round of Bean bag boogie.

With 15 minutes till lunch, we played follow the leader on the way to the playground. The first person in line did a particular movement, the others imitated it, and I counted "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, go to the end." The next person did a new movement to the count of ten. That continued until everyone got to be leader and we were at the playground. We played for a short while then Beth led the "Follow the Leader" line back to the library where everyone washed their hands and got ready for lunch.

Day Three

Today's word is sculpture. We began the day by being creative with clay. Dinosaurs, Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, a train track, jewelry and assorted creatures.

As students finished their clay play, they picked out an animal pattern to make a paper towel pet on parade.

We ran out of time and I didn't get to read them the Statue of Liberty book.

Off to lunch and then afternoon time for reading, checking out books, getting prizes from the treasure chest for reading five books, and watching a slide show of the pictures we took on day one and day two.

I made a video of the kids parading to the playground with their pets. Posted soon, I hope.

Day Two---Chester the Clown

Today was our first field trip. We fumbled and got off to a slow start but made it to the Public Library on time to see Chester the Clown. He is funny, magical and a crowd pleaser. Joelle got to be Chester's helper.

Thanks to LeRoy for driving the bus and to the adults who helped chaperone our 19 bus riders: Herwannah, Leah, Tami and Beth.

Day One

13 kids came to the first day of Summer Reading Club 2009.





We began the day with building creatively with Legos and Duplos.


The word of the day is "Architecture." We said it, we clapped it, we slapped it, we snapped it, we stomped it." How many syllables does Architecture have? FOUR!

We colored pictures of buildings and structures.











On display are posters of famous buildings and the Brooklyn Bridge provided by Picturing America.

Summer Program bags were passed out and filled with book marks, a coupon for free tator tots at Sonic (Sonic is a big supporter of Oklahoma's summer library program), a reading log and stickers.

I read A HOUSE IS A HOUSE FOR ME to the group and they added the title to their reading log. Read 5 books and get a prize from the treasure chest.

Next stop, outside on the playground with 3-D chalk and glasses.










There were three cameras for students to take pictures with. We rotated taking photographs, wearing the 3-D glasses and drawing with the 3-D chalk. Before we knew it, it was time to wash our hands and get ready for lunch.

Our school participates in the summer free lunch program. Children under 18 eat lunch free during the month of June. When they are done eating they can come back to the library to read books, check out books with their parents and get prizes for the books they've read.

It was 1:00 before we knew it. First day was really fun. Tomorrow is a field trip to see Chester the Clown.

• All field trips will be to the Lawton Public Library for their special summer events.
• We will travel by school bus.
• We will leave the school library at 8:45 a.m. and return around 11:45 a.m.
• Children can go eat lunch vvv in the cafeteria when we get back or go home.
• Parents are encouraged to go on the field trips with their children.
• The school library will not be open after the field trips on Wednesdays.
